How To Install Trim Gauge On Yamaha

mojack	posted 03-29-2009 03:18 PM ET (US) Hi Guys. I bought a Yamaha trim gauge to hook up to my 1999 Yamaha F40 four-cycle. I had a new control box put on last year when I got the motor. Here is what I'm up against: --the control box has two pigtails coming out of it --one of them has two paired wires that are lavender, green and one red --the other is single red, yellow, green and black --the trim guage has two sets of wires one set has a single blue and black the other set has a black and a yellow single wire --there is a group of wires that is connected to a circular white plastic adapter and those colors are black, orange and pink. Give me insight as to how to hook this gauge up. Do I need a special wiring harness? Thanks! Derek

jimh	posted 03-29-2009 03:55 PM ET (US) It is extraordinarily difficult to describe electrical connections in a narrative form. The use of a schematic diagram solves this problem. Typically in the owner's manual for a Yamaha motor you will find an electrical schematic diagram that shows the connection of devices like the trim gauge. In electrical wiring the term LAVENDER is not used as a wire insulation color. Wire insulation is usually VIOLET. mojack	posted 03-29-2009 05:58 PM ET (US) I reviewed the electrical schematics for the motor again but it didn't have the control box diagram anywhere. The motor schematic did show the orange wire as the trim position but there is no orange wire coming out of either of the pigtails. I obviously have the wrong trim gauge. Thanks Jim, Derek
number9	posted 03-29-2009 11:43 PM ET (US) Boats.net shows: 6R3-82553-70-00, TRIM HARNESS, 23 Ft, $85.34. That's for the connector coming off the gauge to engine. The other gauge wires are pwr and gnd for gauge and lighting. If connectors available possible to fabricate your harness.
jimh	posted 03-30-2009 12:13 AM ET (US) Too bad the Yamaha manual did not have a schematic. It must be in their SERVICE MANUAL. Maybe someone has one and can help out, or perhaps you can take a peak at one at your dealer. The Yamaha color code data in the REFERENCE section was compiled from a few sources, but none were directly from Yamaha because I could never find anything directly from them with the information. The usual gauge wiring convention is to use BLACK = battery negative BLUE = gauge illumination VIOLET= gauge power (follows motor ignition key switch circuit) Some TRIM gauges have only one wire to the trim sensor, while others use a two wire system with an isolated ground. The TRIM gauge can be tricky because you need to match the gauge to the resistance range of the sender unit and also to the orientation of the sensor, that is, to match the high-low resistance trend to the calibration on the meter face. Some work backwards from others. There is plenty of room for confusion in a TRIM gauge.
mojack	posted 03-30-2009 02:12 PM ET (US) Thanks guys, I thought the trim gauge would be the second easiest to install (second to speedometer). I actually do have the service manual and that is what is so confusing. The colors on the wires coming out of the pigtails really don't correlate to the colors described in the schematic. I'm thinking of just cutting my losses and ditching the trim gauge installation.....
